Anthony James Named to Sports Wall of Fame

Anthony James, head coach of the Charlotte Flights, was named to the Sports Wall of Fame on Tuesday, May 19. Coach James, known by many as “AJ,” was honored for his many contributions to Mecklenburg County, the co-founding of the Charlotte Flights Track and Field Club and his continued success as a track and field coach.
The ceremony’s printed program cited the success of the Charlotte Flights along with AJ’s numerous individual achievements. The most recent being AJ’s selection to the USA World Youth Track and Field Team coaching staff in 2013 and 2015.
Charlotte Flights President, Alvin Woods, introduced AJ at the ceremony with a speech that chronicled AJ’s life, going as far back as his days in Hartsville, South Carolina. Upon receiving his award, AJ thanked those that helped shape the person that he is today. Among those named were his siblings, his daughter Ciara and a select group of previous coaches, coworkers and friends.
AJ, along with Walter Morgan – former PGA golfer and John Crawford – Johnson C. Smith University Hall of Fame athlete and founder of the Charlotte Housing Authority Scholarship Fund, make up the 2nd class of Sports Wall of Fame honorees. The first class includes Dr. Charles L. Sifford, the first african-american to play on the PGA golf tour.
